Hair Extensions Facts & Tips

The Basics

Extensions don't only to add length. You can choose to add volume instead, or in addition to length, which is perfect for fine, limp or thinning hair. Existing hair should be at least 3 inches long to get extensions. Wefted extensions are woven in; newer techniques include invisible sew-ins. You can also add highlights or color to your hair with the use of extensions.

Premium-Extensions provides machine wefted extensions, which lasts longer than most other forms. During installation it is recommended that weft is attached underneath braid and not through the weft. Weft should not be split, or pierced because that will cause shedding.

Caring For Your Extensions

Human hair extensions can be treated as real hair, but more gently. Use a special brush (often a loop brush) made just for extensions, so you don't damage the new hair or the bond. A gentle shampoo is recommended, and the use of cool water helps minimize tangles. A light conditioner will help reduce tangling and keep your new hair supple.

We recommend the following:

  • Comb and smooth hair before shampooing
  • Use a rich shampoo and deep conditioner made for dry hair
  • Gently shampoo the hair in a uniform direction only
  • Dry hair by patting with a towel, do not rub your hair
  • Support your extensions when brushing or combing your hair
  • Sleep with your hair tied up in a net, silk bonnet or scarf
  • Moisturize and condition at least once a week. Use a good leave-in conditioner to keep hair soft.

To avoid premature damage try to avoid:

  • Sleeping with your hair wet
  • Piling hair on top of your head to wash.
  • Applying too much conditioner0.

Preventing Damage to You Own Hair

Your own hair sheds up to 100 hairs daily; you will inevitably have shedding hair trapped in your extensions. As more and more of your own hair sheds, the extensions will put increasing tension on the remaining hair. Therefore that remaining hair cannot hold up the weight of, both, the extension and the shedding hairs, combined. The hair extension begins to take on a 'tightrope' effect. We highly recommend that you keep your extensions in for a maximum of 8 weeks to prevent your own hair from becoming weak and damaged.
